Confusing tweet: NFL player Russell Okung is not paid in Bitcoin

Various news platforms have reported that Okung gets part of his salary in BTC. That is not true, however.

National Football League player Russell Okung is a well-known proponent of Bitcoin ( BTC )

He may convert part of his salary into BTC, but his employer, the Carolina Panthers, don’t pay him in virtual currency. A few crypto publications got misled by this.

A spokesman for the Carolina Panthers confirmed to Bitcoin Superstar that Okung, like the rest of his teammates, is only paid in dollars. What he does with the money is his business, the spokeswoman said. In other words, the player has no agreement with the team to get paid in BTC.

The Offensive Tackle Okung is currently in the final year of a four-year contract and will make $ 13 million this year, according to Spotrac.

The NFL player is said to be using a crypto startup called Strike to convert part of his earnings into bitcoin. A beta version of the application says users can „send money instantly, with no fees, anywhere in the world“. This is available for iOS, Android and Chrome.

Okung contributed to this confusion when he recently posted a tweet claiming he was „paid in Bitcoin“. The tweet was in response to a post made in May 2019 when he first expressed his desire to get paid in BTC.

It is not entirely clear whether Okung wanted to show that he was paid in Bitcoin or whether he wanted to promote the crypto startup with the following tweet :

The NFL star has a huge following on Twitter because of his celebrity and Bitcoin advocacy. His Twitter headline reads: „life liberty, and #bitcoin“. His followers include Michael Saylor and Anthony Pompliano , as well as other crypto advocates.

In his recent tweets, he promotes buying Bitcoin and educating citizens about the impact of inflation on the purchasing power of the US dollar.
